YOU CAN DIVORCE WITH DIGNITY.
We replace aggression with understanding. We treat every client as a human being – not a case file.
The Miller Law Group is not a typical family law, divorce, or business law firm. While many other firms focus on litigious battles, attempting to obtain results for their clients through aggressive tactics, we take a different approach.
We believe in using collaboration and conversation to reach results that are fair for all parties involved in a range of family law matters.
We help our clients resolve disputes related to issues including:
- Child custody & parenting plans
- Child support & alimony
- Visitation rights
- Distribution of marital property
We also represent clients in other matters that are often related to family law disputes, including estate planning and probate, contract and partnership disputes and premarital agreements.
Meet Our Team
Going through her own divorce prompted veteran lawyer Katherine Miller to develop her own approach to practicing family law. Katherine’s unique training and methods in Collaborative Practice and mediation give her clients the support and compassion they need to work through legal issues. Katherine achieves positive results for her clients and their spouses and families—solutions that work over the long-term.
Collaborative Practice and mediation provide lasting solutions. Because both parties agree to the terms of the settlement, the rates of compliance are much higher in the long run. Katherine’s techniques are transferable to non-family conflicts, and she has opened her practice to include other types of disputes.
Sarah Hechtman has practiced matrimonial and family law for over a decade and is a trained collaborative lawyer and family mediator. She has handled complex divorce cases involving substantial financial assets as well as highly contested child custody cases. Sarah has tried divorce and child custody cases in both the Supreme and Family Courts of New York State. Having witnessed the damage that the court system can do to families, she is committed to helping clients resolve their family disputes without the need for such intervention.
Before practicing family law, Sarah worked as a civil rights lawyer prosecuting class action cases on behalf of children, both at Children’s Rights (representing children in foster care) and at Advocates for Children of New York (seeking educational services for New York City public school students). She also served as an Assistant District Attorney in the New York County District Attorney’s Office where she was a member of the Domestic Violence and Sex Crimes Units. Additionally, Sarah has worked as a consultant on policy matters to the New York City Department of Education.
Sarah’s interest in the welfare of children is what led her to train in alternative methods of resolving family law disputes. She was trained in mediation at the Center for Family and Divorce Mediation in 2003 and in Collaborative Law in 2006.
Inspired by the humane principles of mediation and collaborative law, Ivan Alter guides clients through difficult family law issues in ways that rebuild respect and place children first. As a former litigator, Ivan has witnessed the tremendous costs—both personal and financial—of divorces fought in the courtroom. In his practice Ivan helps clients find solutions that spare them and their families from the destructive consequences of acrimonious divorce.
Ivan understands the feelings of anger, hurt and uncertainty that arise when a marriage breaks down. He counsels his clients with compassion as they work through these emotions and make sound decisions for the future. Ivan employs his extensive experience in litigation to offer clients a real-world assessment of the potential impact of a court proceeding so they can make informed choices. Helping clients understand their options, he works with clients to develop creative solutions to reach their goals that might not be possible in the court system.
